Craft Your Costume, Ninja Style

Hi, Reader!

Spooky season is upon us! The skeletons are emerging from storage, the ghosts are being hung on the trees, and tombstones are littering the yards. Fall is coming! Monday was our first chilly day in Indiana... and it was much enjoyed.

As the pumpkin spice starts to flow, so do the Halloween costume ideas. I wish I could say that my kids' costumes come first, but I'm normally working on them at the 11th hour. Plus, they often change their minds. That early September idea is nowhere in sight by early October. However, one child has illustrated their vision. It's a Cheshire Cat inspired dress with a big puffy skirt. I knew that I saved those square dance petticoats for a good reason. (Ready to hoe-down? yee-haw)

I just love this time of year. Every fall my Grandmother would make what she called "can plus" soup. She started with a regular can of soup, whatever kind, and then kept adding things to make it her own creation. It was nothing like the original soup when she was done, but way better.

I do the same thing with costumes, I use pre-made basics and then I add to them. If the costume needs a black body suit, I'm NOT going to make it. I'll buy one and add the other costume elements to it. Making the best use of my time and always making sure to buy a little big for extra warmth layers. Growing up in Michigan, costumes were sized to go over snow suits. Here it just needs to be big enough for thermals, much easier.

Over the years my kids have asked me to turn them into so many different creatures and characters. I often had to figure them out at the last minute. So, I took those patterns and made them available to you, to help make your Halloween a bit easier.

Hi, Reader! The discussion of death and end of life planning is not an easy one. If it's a sensitive topic for you, skip this one. If someone else had to sort through your craft supplies, would they know what was valuable, what was meaningful and where the usable materials should go? That isn’t meant to be gloomy. It’s an opportunity to make thoughtful decisions now—especially when a collection includes inherited fabric, specialized tools or supplies that deserve a better destination than a...

Hi, Reader! Craft supplies can be especially difficult to declutter because nearly everything still holds creative potential. That fabric could become something. Those tools are still useful. And inherited supplies may carry memories of the person who owned them. I’m joining Sandy Krokaugger for the Reduce the Clutter Summit, where we’ll talk about how to decide what genuinely belongs in a working craft stash, what can be rehomed and what your family may eventually need to know about...
